Welcome 2017!

31 Dec

In 2016 we’ve seen a lot of bad and a lot of good.

People have passed on, wars have been waged, and yet a kindness has come out of all of the anger and hatred that the world seems to have for itself.

Personally 2016 has been an incredible time! I started an incredible job with fantastic co-workers and incredible support from our management. My small business HostingEh has grown incredibly with some of the most fantastic clients I could have possibly asked for.

I’ve watched my little girls get a little bit older and a little bit wiser, and I get to share it all with some of the most supportive and loving friends and family!

I got to visit Toronto and watch the new Pure Pwnage movie with the most kickass people I know! Got to meet some new people too such as my new drinking buddy from England Jerry!Friends at The Madison

For me 2016 has been incredible, and I can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store!

See you all in the New Year! Have a happy, healthy and joy filled end to 2016!

Pure Pwnage Trip Part 4: A Letter

26 Jan

Friends at The Madison

My Fellow Pure Pwnage Fans:

This past weekend in Toronto was an absolute blast, and I feel like I need to do some sharing before going back to adulting.

Getting to see everyone that I haven’t had the chance to see since long before I became a father was an amazing experience that was only surpassed by meeting a lot of people who I’ve only ever spoken to over the internet. I was absolutely blown away by how many people came out from near and far to not only see the movie, but to just spend time with a huge group of friends….. Even thinking about the weekend it seems silly to use the word friends as we’ve been as close as a family for so many years now.

Just because we don’t see each other IRL very often does not mean that you couldn’t contact any one of us for anything. We are one huge family who have known each other for almost 10 years and those kinds of friends don’t come along every day.

I’d especially like to thank Isaac Wilson (IW4) for organizing our friends to the south and getting everyone that wanted to come to the show, to the show. You’ve shown extraordinary compassion, leadership and friendship from as long as I’ve known you and it is truly an honor to count you among my friends.

To Geoff Lapaire, Jarett Cale, Mark Single, Miranda Plant, and the rest of the Pure Pwnage cast and crew: You guys killed it! Even after all these years, your hard work and dedication have once again translated to one of the funniest and most incredible movie experiences I’ve ever had the good fortune of witnessing.

I’m not sure how it is you all manage to stay so humble and grounded, but your fans certainly do appreciate it! I’ve heard nothing but good things about how good you are with your fan base, and for that we are all truly thankful! Keep on kicking ass!

This weekend was a total blast with all kinds of amazing people and as we all go back to adulting I think we’re all going to be thinking about the next time we all get together and have an incredible weekend together again.

A really good friend started out the night with this quote and that’s what I’ll leave you with:

There are good ships and wood ships, and ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships, may they always be!

How I Got Into Coding

16 Jan

A lot of people have asked me about how I got into coding and I don’t think I’ve ever told the story before on this little blog of mine.

Growing up I was really into skateboarding and to be honest I never really even looked at a computer. That’s when I met Chris Panagapko. Chris was the one to get me stoked on computers and learning all kinds of really cool shit!

Chris and I used to play a lot of Counter-Strike together and we decided to try and get a server up and off the ground. Chris at that time already knew quite a bit about VMware Workstation and so we set up a Windows server and installed the Counter-Strike dedicated server software on it. Chris was one of those lucky few who had a static IP at home, so we were able to run the server out of his parents basement.

We spent a lot of time in that basement messing with servers and virtualization. It was a lot of fun for a couple of nerdy kids growing up. Eventually we started a Counter-Strike clan aptly named cNc (ChrisNet Clan) which was appropriate at that time but now just makes me laugh! It was a lot of fun and again I learned some awesome shit because of it.

We wanted a web site for the clan so Chris introduced me to Microsoft Frontpage to get the job done. I remember spending hours and hours messing around with code and looking at the live preview pane hoping what I had done would work. I started to learn the basics of HTML and CSS and once I had mastered that, I really wanted to learn how to process data through a web site.

Enter PHP

I had toyed around with a lot of different premade PHP systems like E107, PHPBB, and eventually WordPress, but I wanted to write custom software. Stuff for a purpose that I could define and then write code for.

I found PHP to be one of the easiest languages to pick up because the syntax is super simple and it is very fault tolerant. It just worked for me.

Eventually I made it up in my head that this is what I wanted to do with my life. Create applications for people to use on the web. I invested a lot of time away from friends and parties to learn how to do this sort of stuff, then I went to college to learn all the fundamentals that you don’t really get when you learn on your own (or maybe some people do?).

In the end I owe my entire beginnings and career to Chris. He was someone who loved this stuff and simply shared a small chunk of his passion with me. That’s how I got into coding.
